My top 5 WordPress plugins for 2019

FOR FELLOW DEVELOPERS

keiran keiran September 12th 2019

Plugins are the bread and butter to any WordPress website. You’d have to be mad to create a site without them.

With a killer combo of plugins installed into your backend, you can almost instantaneously improve the look, feel and functionality of your website.

There are an abundance of options when it comes to WordPress plugins, the art for any developer is finding that perfect suite.

To make the process a little easier, I’ve compiled a bunch of great WordPress plugins. All of which have helped me build various websites throughout the year and in my opinion.

…They’re a must!

So, in no particular order. Here are my top 5 WordPress plugins for 2019.

1. Advanced Custom Fields

Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) plugin overhauls WordPress’s Custom Fields functionality, by making it much more friendly to the user with an easy to use GUI.

ACF allows you to create custom fields that appear only for certain posts, pages, custom post types etc. I’ve used ACF on every project I’ve had this year and couldn’t imagine a WordPress website without it!

2. Yoast SEO

I think we can all agree SEO is a fundamental must for any website. Users trust search engines and having a presence in the top positions for the keywords the user is searching, is almost a requirement in 2019.

Yoast SEO holds your hand through the SEO process with step by step guides optimising your content. From the optimisation of your title and h2 tags, to basic readability and metadata, Yoast SEO makes search engine optimisation so easy your Grandmother could do it (if she even knew what SEO was, I suppose).

3. WP Super Cache

WP Super Cache

Website speed is huge in 2019, there are many resources to help test your websites speed (GTMetrix is a great example). It can very quickly get complicated trying to manage your sites speed, but here’s where WP Super Cache comes in.

This free and easy to use plugin generates static HTML files from your dynamic WordPress pages meaning that the server will use that file instead of processing the bulkier/slower PHP scripts. This gives your website a great baseline speed, with minimal effort.

4. Custom Form 7

If you use any kind of form on your website and are not using Contact Form 7, you’re doing things wrong.

This lightweight plugin allows you to avoid unnecessary additional coding and quickly create beautiful looking contact forms. CF7 comes with reCaptcha verification and works hand in hand with Akismet(Number 5 on my list) to stop those pesky spammers.

5. Akismet Anti-Spam

Asides from making a fool of myself every time I attempt to say the name, Akismet is the one and only plugin needed to keep the scammers away. It was built by the same team who built WordPress… surely you can’t go wrong.

This plugin filters and reviews every comment that is shared on your website, providing a history for each one so that you can determine which comments were found to be spammy by Askimet or the admins.

Akismet is free for personal sites and certainly not a bank buster for the premium version.
